LIVE DVD - Irvine, CA 1996 - The Devolution
of a DVD cover design

| Since
many curious spuds have inquired about the cover graphics of this
release, we here at Club Devo have a duty to inform.
Did DEVO design it? What's the story on those photos? Is that an
energy-domed, spud-collared sock-monkey??
Now it can be told...
|
It
was 2 or 3 years ago when I sent 2 folders of photos & negatives
to Rhino Records for use in their upcoming Devo DVD project.
At that time, no one was sure what show(s) would be used, so I sent
a mix of photos from Devo's shows in the 90's & early 2K's;
Each folder labeled & creditied to the photographer. Brian Applegate
and several other folks close to the Devo camp sent their own
batches. Over the next year or so, I began to get concerned about
my photos, and called Gerald Casale a few times to be updated
on the project. For a while, his reply would often be that he was
waiting to hear from Rhino, but changed later on to say that Rhino
had indefinitely shelved the project. That's the last I heard about
the project until early 2004, when Rhino announced it's release.
Below is the cover in question, comments and corrections indicated,
etc. Duty Now!

All the people that started the Devo project years ago were fired
or quit. Although photos for each DVD were delivered
in sealed envelopes with the photographers' names as requested,
they were shuffled, misplaced, some lost, and delivered
to Mutato in one jumbled mess almost two years later. I saw an e-mail
of the cover photo as it was going to print.
No one in Devo was asked to check credits or questioned about any
